Picnic Days

Karen Doyle
The subtle warmth of summer… the soft haze of coastal Southern California’s June gloom… the later sunsets, the wildly rampant blossoms, from jacaranda to bougainvillea, Birds of Paradise on the bush, gulls and cormorants on the beach, outdoor feasts at the Bowl, the tantalizing glimmer of stars and sea and neon, cruising cars, and postcard memories. These are the picnic days, and here to welcome them are three artists whose work vibrates with the joy of summer streaming in.
Karen Doyle
Whether creating lush landscapes en plein air or in her studio, Doyle shapes dreamy wonder awash in light and impressionistic color. Both delicate and bold, her works vibrate with the hum of sea, sky, forest, and desert alike, each brush stroke offering a rich luminosity.
Jennifer Chan
Chan’s work shifts like summer shadows, slipping between glowing acrylic abstracts and pours to vivid, representative oil paintings of garden hibiscus and other flora, to layered and mysteriously geometric watercolors. Chan’s range offers an alchemic world that envelopes viewers with her radiant palette.
Skye Amber Sweet
The Skyepoet of intricate pattern, Sweet’s layered lines and brilliant colors draw the eye and heart. From vast murals of fecund forests to lacy koi, aqua elephants, ruby roses, and explosively emotional human figures and faces, the artist captures the intensity and fleeting wonder of joyous, everyday magic in motion.
They sat at a table, weathered and wide,
Under cottonwood branches, side by side.
The June sun filtered through leaves like lace,
Softening time, and softening space.

Gateways
May 9 - May 30, 2026
All three artists’ work are gateways to a rich experience, an unfolding world. In the words of Alec Derwent Hope, the art in this exhibition serves as “the dream and…my gates of entry/The means by which I waken into light.”
Step through these gateways, and enjoy the brilliant illumination of the Scott A. Trimble, Karen Hochman Brown, and Kaye Freeman in Gateways.
Scott A. Trimble
May is the gateway to summer, and with the beautiful work in these three solo artists’ exhibitions, it’s time to step through each wonderful passage they present and explore their visionary work. Gateways merge, flow, and split. They are exclusive, inclusive, and parallel – which is what you might say about the gateways you’ll enter on your exploration through a universe of evocative, inspirational, and alchemic art.
Kaye Freeman
Freeman explores the transformative micro and macro interconnections of the environment, the self, and nature. Freeman works in painting, drawing, performance, and film, as she takes viewers on a passionate magical mystery tour that vibrates with color and surges with light and movement. Her images are both startlingly innovative and compellingly voluptuous.
Scott A. Trimble
Scott A. Trimble’s work is a poetic fairytale, stories interwoven with feeling, memory, and the wonder of dreams. His writerly titles lead the viewer deep into imagery that evokes two worlds: ours, and another more surreal landscape of the mind and spirit. His art manifests memories and creates a deeply involving visual narrative that is entirely, gorgeously, his own.
Karen Hochman Brown
Experiencing Hochman Brown’s uniquely energetic forms and fascinating process is indeed a gateway to a new dimension, one in which her lush digital constructs is manipulated into a variety of art forms that dazzle with their own inherent mixture of line, shape, and movement. Whether working in time-based video or with fabric hangings that feature overstitching to accentuate the underlying print, her images are blissfully hypnotic.

Amy Thornberry
The month of April is a transformative one, not quite ready to herald the arrival of summer, but promising a bountiful season to come. Transformations speaks to this promise with three solo shows from uniquely vibrant artists.
Amy Thornberry
Thornberry manipulates her mixed media and painted materials into portals that cause pause, wonder, and reflection. Drawn to the Buddhis practice of tonglen, which means both sending and taking, through her art, she moves viewers from the dark into the light with often ethereal, layered, and vividly colorful works that dance with meaning and a magical sense of motion.
Connie Saddlemire
To experience Saddlemire’s complex, geometrically abstract work is like entering a mesmerizing and intricate puzzle or taking a step into a brilliantly ordered wonderland. Experimentation and innovation lead her into a world that’s filled with compelling change and woven patterns that each explore a special story.
Sharon Weiner
Sharon Weiner’s abstracts are alive with light and color, lush and shifting, embodying both sensation and thought. As an artist, she gives form to her own lived experiences and to a profound sense of awareness itself. Describing her work as visualizing self-revelation, viewers will find her work calls to and reveals meaningful emotions within themselves.
Both individually and combined, these artists’ works embody every transformation that April promises, unfolding a sense of wonder, waiting to embrace each viewer with joy, and as T.S. Eliot wrote “...mixing/Memory and desire, stirring.”
It’s a time to celebrate new growth, and a time to remember the past. A time for Transformations.
